And whether you know...
Alzheimer's disease medicine is found
September 5, 2011
In clinic of neurosurgery of the Cologne university the group of doctors investigated an electrostimulation method in treatment of Alzheimer's disease which will badly respond to medicinal treatment today. The other day the head of experiment Folker Shturm reported the first encouraging results. "Year of electrostimulation was not in vain. The patient complaining of loss of attention and memory, complexity with orientation in space feels much better now" — with pride professor summed up.
First attempts of electrostimulation
The Cologne doctors the first decided on such difficult experiment. By means of low-frequency tension they decided to activate a basal kernel of Meynert, a site which is responsible for a musculoskeletal system and thinking that had to stop a further course of a disease. Once among doctors there was already a similar attempt to treat Alzheimer's disease, but its similarity consisted only in electrostimulation use. Experiment was made at Toronto University, then the main emphasis was placed on the brain site which is responsible for memory, on it electrodes, however such therapy of the Canadian neurosurgeon Andres Lozano established did not lead to considerable positive takes.
Storm hides nothing from the patients, and says that though the new method is rather encouraging, however absolute guarantees cannot be given meanwhile. Besides electrostimulation can help not all patients, it is connected first of all with illness degree: already at the earliest stages destruction of sites of a brain begins.
At the moment six people participate in research, and the general results will declare after full completion of experiment.
According to preliminary estimates, the cost of this type of therapy will make 30-40 thousand euros. Despite such considerable sum of money, patients in case of a positive outcome will manage to save considerable means on medicines and leaving.
Doctors are going to treat patients with genetic indicators the first in view of the fact that the illness at them begins to be shown at earlier age. Such patients make only 1% of total quantity of people with Alzheimer's disease.
In general, forecasts of doctors concerning "Alzheimer" unfavourable. If in 2006 patients with such disease there were 26,6 million, then to 2050 of their quantity can increase four times, so about a radical method of treatment which research, undoubtedly, will take a lot of time, it is necessary to think already now.
To the doctors treating Alzheimer's disease is at whom to study
Deep stimulation of various departments of a brain for treatment of various diseases is carried out more than 10 years. Implantation in hemispheres of special electrodes requires a craniotrypesis, and the small device which is located under skin a little below than clavicles. The continuous impulses sent by this device to a brain stimulate the damaged sites or in case of need suppress their activity. Such method is used in treatment of an illness of Parkinson for a long time, and today about 40.000 patients go with it implanted electrodes.
