Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Tannins — what is it?

In order that it is more accurate to imagine the mechanism of effect of tannins, efficiency and safety of their use, it is necessary to understand in the beginning what is tannins as they are extracted and by what properties they are characterized.

Tannins (tannic acids, gallodubilny acids) – the phenolic substances possessing a large number of groups – OH. A chemical formula of the tannin – C76H52O46.

These substances are widespread in a vegetable kingdom quite widely and have characteristic astringent taste and the tanning properties. Ability of tannins to create strong bonds with complex carbohydrates, proteins and other natural polymers found the application, both in the industry, and in medicine.

Today the natural tannin is found in many plants: chestnut, oak, acacia, larch, fir-tree, eucalyptus, cocoa, camellia Chinese, pomegranate, cinchona tree, persimmon, kebracho and so forth. Most often this organic compound was extracted from ink nutlets of an oak, a sumac tanning and sumach tannic.

Later the way of receiving the tannin in the chemical way where the synthesized drug not only possessed all properties natural was found, but also exceeded it by a number of criteria: practical lack of impurity, convenient consistence, control of stages of production.

Today, the synthetic tannin is a medicine which thanks to the properties, is used in therapy of a number of diseases.

The knitting effects of drug are caused by its ability to sedimentation of proteins with parallel forming of dense albuminates. In case of putting drug on a wound surface or mucous membranes partial coagulation of proteins which contain in wound exudate or slime that leads to emergence of the strong proteinaceous film protecting surrounding fabrics and the nerve terminations which are in them from further irritation is observed.

Parallel effect of medicine leads to local vasoconstriction, reduction of an inflammation and lowering of pain.

Indications to use

  • inflammations of gums, throats, an oral cavity, at cold, cold, laryngitis and so forth;
  • necrosis of soft tissues, ulcers, burns, nipple cracks;
  • intoxication alkaloids (except for Eserinum of salicylate, morphine, atropine, cocaine, nicotine, because of education with the tannin of the bonds destroyed by a gastric juice);
  • as an antidote (at intoxication heavy metals: mercury salts, lead and so forth);
  • as astringent;
  • at diarrhea;
  • at therapy of hemorrhoids;
  • at viral diseases (papular acrodermatitis, chicken pox and so forth);
  • for increase of coagulability of blood;
  • for treatment of various dermatological infections of a virus etiology (eczema, herpes infections, dieback, etc.);
  • healing of anal fissures and first-degree burns;
  • therapy of surgical wounds in a proctology, urology and gynecology;
  • skin diseases at children (an erythema of buttocks, intertrigo, the impetigo, perspiration of feet, etc.).

Contraindications

The only contraindication to use of the tannin is individual hypersensitivity of the patient to it.

Side effects

Generally observed side effects of drug are shown by various allergic manifestations.

At individual sensitivity of the patient to the tannin are possible: intestinal complications, intoxication of a liver, disturbance in work of kidneys, irritations of a digestive tract.

Application instruction of the Tannin

Outwardly, appoint in the form of greasings and rinsings.

In a throat, an oral cavity, a pharynx, a nose apply 1–2% to treatment of inflammatory processes glyceric or aqueous solution of the tannin in the form of rinsings.

At decubituses, ulcers, burns, various cracks use, depending on severity, 3%, 5% and 10% solutions or ointments of drug.

For a gastric lavage, in case of poisoning with heavy metals or alkaloids, appoint 0,5% aqueous solution in volume – 2 liters.

Overdose

In case of use of excess volume of tannins, disturbances in the course of digestion of mineral substances, including iron are possible that can lead to the complications connected with anemia (deficit of iron) and to other shortcomings of biological minerals.

Interaction

The tannin creates insoluble compounds with salts of heavy metals and alkaloids.

The synthesized drug well are combined with etiotropic means and antibiotics.

Terms of sale

Most often, medicines (ointments, solutions, cream) on the basis of the tannin, produce and release according to the recipe of the attending physician.

Storage conditions

Powder should be stored in well corked container, in the dry place.

Period of validity

The period of validity of the made drug is defined in the drugstore which prepared it.

Special instructions

Many modern doctors do not recommend drug for use orally for the purpose of treatment of diarrhea because the tannin, first of all, creates bonds with proteins mucous a stomach and gets into intestines in insufficient quantity.

It is not recommended to use in the form of enemas at proctal cracks, because of risk of forming of blood clots.

In case of prevention of acute intoxications alkaloids it is necessary to remember that with some alkaloids (cocaine, morphine, atropine, physostigmine, nicotine) the tannin creates unstable connections that demands to make a gastric lavage in the shortest possible time.

To children

Unlike drugs of hormonal action, use of the tannin for treatment of skin inflammatory diseases at children's age, including at newborns is possible (according to the recommendation of the doctor).
